But not with a vengeance. The first two weeks of September with kids getting back to school, a whack of birthdays amongst kids, family and friends.  Book Extract (August 30, 2011)

No, I’m not bored, just doing so many things in the background so I’ve decided to offer up another segment from my book. Here is the beginning of that snippet:

PAIN IS INEVITABLE – SUFFERING IS OPTIONAL – I HAVE CHOSEN TO LIVE WITH PAIN. IT IS DIFFICULT BUT I CAN’T HELP IT.

Mike P., the owner of Mike’s Chip Truck was a Romanian immigrant of Ukrainian origin who initially settled in Ottawa and eventually made his way to Oshawa.

Apparently, working on a chip truck as an 11 year-old conferred a status of semi-celebrity to one’s peers in those days. Unfortunately, I was not aware of this “esteemed prominence”. Why is it that some of those involved in a world of celebrity never ever see how famous they actually are? I was like the Johnny Depp of after school workers. I wonder if my autograph from those days is worth anything.

On Knowing Jack

Many of us can recount incidents where we have had the occasional ‘Brush with Fame’. I have had my fair share of these. One such encounter occurred in 1992 when I had the opportunity of engaging in ‘politicking’ of another kind with an extremely self-defined Toronto City Councillor by the name of Jack Layton. I hope you enjoy viewing the video as much as I have enjoyed reliving that memory for almost 20 years now.

Tony vs. Anthony … but they’re not robbin’ people blind.

Back in my 20’s, like so many people, I was interested in financial security. Being a welfare kid and basically working for everything that I owned, I knew the value of money.

On one occasion when I was browsing reading material, I came across a book with the title “How to Become a Millionaire”.

It was only 106 pages long.

Here’s what I have for my foreword for the non-million seller that I’m writing. Please feel free to have a read. Feedback is invited, encouraged and appreciated.

Foreword

Their burnished faces glow in the fading light of the setting sun. The flames from the campfire dance amongst us and use our bodies as living canvas upon which to paint their poetry of motion. Everyone is laughing or talking animatedly. I imagine that I have chanced upon an Egyptian netherworld where discarnate pharaohs and their queens have finally woken up from their long sleep. Our death masks have melded into our skin and we have all been transformed into breathing, living gold, copper and bronze.

“The Magic of Oprah”

I will never watch another full episode of Oprah for as long as I live … except maybe for the one where she invites me as a guest or she agrees to be a guest on my weblog.

The reason for this is simple. Now this might seem harsh, but actually, Oprah has secret superpowers.

Allow me to explain.

In 1992, a lawyer whom I had known my entire life literally from the first second of my birth cheated my wife and me out of everything that we had. Now this was a process that transpired over a period of a few months. We found out in July of 1991 that something was amiss … when my wife was 7 months pregnant with our first baby.

I kept meeting with my lawyer to remedy the situation until finally, one day in the summer of 1992, this solicitor told me these exact words. “It’s all business, Mike. F–k off and take it like a man. Then he sat back and smirked and said, ‘There’s nothing you can do. You can’t touch me at all because The Law Society of Upper Canada will protect me to the utmost.’”

I went home, hugged my wife and sat, in the middle of the kitchen floor crying, pressing my very young daughter close to my chest because you see … I’m the father, I’m the husband, I’m the provider, I am my brother’s keeper. But just at that moment I could not be all those things at once.

About an hour or so later, I pulled myself together and began sweeping the floor. You know – like in the Beatles’ song, ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’. By the way, Jeff Healey, rest his soul, did the best cover versions of that song that I have ever heard.

And while I was sweeping, Oprah was conducting an interview with Deepak Chopra on the television playing in the background. I sat  down and listened.

What I mean is, I really, really listened to what was being discussed.

The gist of what was said is, ‘We can change our realities through sheer force of will and mind projection.”

And I took that to heart.

So I went to the bedroom, I lay down and I relaxed. I reached a state of perfect calm and lucidity. I visualized that I was a python and that I had captured this lawyer by his heel. And then slowly, surely and deliberately I worked my way up until I had coiled myself around him.

Three years later, we reached a settlement with that lawyer. Now, I am allowed to mention that there was a settlement; however I’m not allowed to say for how much. But that’s beside the point. The fact that there was an out of court settlement says everything. This lawyer had cheated friends of his family that he had known for over 30 years, he cheated the godparents of both of his children, he cheated older people out of their life savings savings and he cheated some of the nicest people in this town to such a degree that some of them were forced to come out of retirement.

But you know what the sad part of this entire ordeal is? He was right about one thing. He was right about The Law Society of Upper Canada. You see, they hit him with the biggest, lightest, fluffiest helium-filled pillow that they could find.

And he is still … I like this word … ‘practising’ law today.

So what I got from all of this with respect to Oprah is, “Get on with it. Don’t waste your life, don’t waste your time. Use the ideas that I and my guests offer on my programmes and then go make something not only of yourself but also of others.”

Now, if you feel that you need to watch ten, one hundred or one thousand episodes of Oprah to make yourself and/or others around you a better person, so be it.

I graduated after just one single episode.

You know how they say that when life gives you sour grapes, turn it into wine? I’m doing that right now. In whatever spurts of time, I am working on my autobiography which some of you may know by the title of ‘How I Remained Phenomenally Average Without Ever Becoming Famous.

Thank you Oprah, thank you Deepak – thanks to the two of you for not only helping me make it real, but for helping me keep it real.

P.S. Here’s a link to the Jeff Healey song that I mentioned. I would love to embed it into the site but out of respect for copyright laws this is about the best I can do.

Hi Folks,

I hope you enjoy a new feature titled Mikey’s Boomer Showcase. The purpose is to highlight some of the heralded unheralded achievements of Baby Boomers. I remember when I was growing up there was a local television show named Tiny Talent Time. Consider this segment as Tiny Talent Time … For Now.

If you have anything to offer in the same vein or know of anyone who should be recognized for some similar achievement, please feel free to contribute.

Cheers,

Mikey.

These Oranges Might be Bitter-Sweet

Regret is like fire. It is a wonderful servant but a terrible master. It can eat away at you for decades. It can be an internal obstacle every conscious living moment of your life or it can be the inspiration that catapults you to the stars.

I have been living with some form of regret or other for the last 50 years. Yes, some of the incidents are quite hilarious and meaningless. Others are a bit more serious, meaningful and more difficult to let go of. Of the few billion Baby Boomers (and non-Baby Boomers) on this planet, I am sure that there are enough amongst us who would like to discharge ourselves of some of the emotional burdens associated with our personal regrets.

“My Orange Backpack” is a site based on an idea that hopes to offer participants an opportunity to ease an internal burden or two.

Anyone who has ever held a child in their hands knows the indescribable feelings that can overcome you when you gaze into his eyes – the sense of joy when you see him smile and the sense of despair when you feel helpless to stop the pain. All you can do, as a parent, is dig down deeper than you ever imagined possible. Kudos to the Calgary Flames players and administration.

Peace!
